Minister for Health Greg Hunt announces Australian Brain Cancer Mission Strategic Advisory Group

Minister for Health Greg Hunt today announced the establishment and appointment of the Australian Brain Cancer Mission Strategic Advisory Group to support Cancer Australia in the implementation of the Mission.

The Strategic Advisory Group will provide strategic advice and guidance on achieving the Mission’s goal of doubling survival rates and improving the quality of life of patients with brain cancer over the next 10 years, with the longer term aim of defeating brain cancer.

Professor Adele Green, AC, Senior Scientist, Head, Cancer and Population Studies Group, QIMR Berghofer, has been appointed as Chair of the Strategic Advisory Group. Professor Green has made significant and outstanding contributions to medical research. Internationally, she has been a Chair or member of many committees at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), including the IARC Scientific Council.

The Strategic Advisory Group comprises brain cancer patients and consumers, clinicians, researchers, co-investors, and industry representatives, and a member of the Medical Research Future Fund’s (MRFF) Australian Medical Research Advisory Board.

The Australian Brain Cancer Mission Strategic Advisory Group will also provide advice on emerging issues nationally and internationally to inform the work of the Mission, and identify and advise on collaborative and leveraging opportunities  to maximise investment within the scope of the Mission’s Goal and Objectives.

On 29 October 2017, the Minister for Health and Minister for Sport, the Hon Greg Hunt, announced a $100 million Australian Brain Cancer Mission. The Mission represents a partnership between the Australian Government, philanthropists, researchers and clinicians, patients and their families. The Australian Government is contributing $50 million under the Medical Research Future Fund, Minderoo Foundation's Eliminating Cancer Initiative has committed $10 million, and the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation has committed $20 million to support the Mission. Further contributions are being sought by Government.
