Cancer Clinical Trials Initiatives

On 20 December 2010, the Australian Government announced funding to a range of exciting cancer trial initiatives to assist in the development and conduct of high-quality, national cancer clinical trials throughout Australia.

Under the Support for Cancer Clinical Trials program, Cancer Australia will provide over $14 million to support Australia’s thirteen National Cancer Clinical Trials Groups to develop and manage national collaborative cancer clinical trials. 

In addition, to further build on the Australian Government’s commitment to improving cancer outcomes in regional Australia, Cancer Australia will expand the Regional Multi-site Clinical Trials Capacity Building Network, established in 2009. Ten regional cancer centres, throughout five states and territories, have been awarded funding to increase the ability of people living in regional Australia with cancer to access and participate in cancer clinical trials undertaken by the National Cancer Clinical Trials Groups. The ten regional centres awarded funding includes:

  • Bendigo Health Care Group;
  • Border Medical Oncology Research (Wodonga);
  • North Coast Cancer Institutes at Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Port Macquarie Base Hospital;
  • Royal Hobart Hospital;
  • Cairns Cancer Centre;
  • Royal Darwin Hospital;
  • LauncestonGeneral Hospital;
  • Ballarat Oncology and Haematology Services; and
  • Tweed Heads Hospital.
