Cancer Australia welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement of $5.8 million to Cancer Australia in the 2017-2018 Budget.

“Cancer Australia is pleased to lead a focus on research and clinical trial initiatives to advance the diagnosis, treatment, management and analysis of childhood cancer and improve outcomes for low survival childhood cancers” said Dr Helen Zorbas, CEO Cancer Australia.

Cancer Australia  will also fast track international research collaborations of paediatric brain cancer in Australia including through support for new clinical trials led by the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Haematology Oncology Group (ANZCHOG), one of which includes innovative molecular diagnostic profiling for paediatric brain tumours.

Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in children in Australia and survival rates for some cancers common among children have not improved in more than 25 years.  This very welcome focus will increase our capacity to support quality research and give hope to children with cancer and their families.
