The first few months after cancer treatment is over can be a confusing time.

Some people find that their emotions only really hit them when treatment is over and they have time to reflect on what’s happened. Some people say they feel lost without the routine of cancer treatment. Others say they feel a sense of ‘limbo’, wondering how to move on. For many people, these feelings ease with time.

While it’s normal to want to return to health after months of treatment, your body may need more time to recuperate. It can take time to get over the effects of cancer treatment. Each person’s schedule is different, so it’s important to give yourself and your body time to recover from the physical and emotional impact of treatment.

It’s likely that friends and family will be excited about having you back in their lives, and they may not be prepared for you to still have days when you don’t feel so positive. Tell the people close to you how you feel and let them know if you’re having a bad day.

You may want to speak to a person who has been through a similar experience. Contact the Cancer Council on 13 11 20 to find out about the Cancer Connect program.
