Parliamentarians from all sides of politics have gathered for the 2014 Teal Ribbon Breakfast to raise awareness of ovarian cancer in Australia.
Speaking at this morning’s Breakfast, hosted by Cancer Australia and Ovarian Cancer Australia at Parliament House, Cancer Australia CEO, Professor Helen Zorbas acknowledged the vital work being done to reduce the impact of the disease and improve the wellbeing of those affected.
“Today, Teal Ribbon Day, we recognise the impact of ovarian cancer on women in Australia and their partners and families.” Professor Zorbas said.
“Approximately 1,500 women in Australia are expected to be diagnosed this year, and despite improvements in the survival rate in recent years, the prognosis for women with ovarian cancer remains poor.”
“The majority of women are diagnosed with advanced stage disease and as a result, only about four out of 10 women with ovarian cancer will be alive five years after diagnosis.”
To assist Australian women in identifying and acting on the symptoms of ovarian cancer, Cancer Australia has today released an animated video, titled ‘No one knows your body like you do’. The video, designed to be shared on social media, prompts women to familiarise themselves with their bodies and test their knowledge about ovarian cancer.
“As there is no effective screening test for ovarian cancer, it’s important for women to be aware of the most common symptoms of the disease, so they can identify and act on any persistent changes that are unusual for them.” Professor Zorbas said.
