Health Minister Tanya Plibersek today announced the appointment of three new members of the Cancer Australia Advisory Council and the reappointment of five current members.
The Advisory Council, established under the Cancer Australia Act 2006, provides advice to the CEO of Cancer Australia about the performance of its functions in providing national leadership to reduce the impact of cancer in the community.
The new members of the Cancer Australia Advisory Council are Professor Jim Bishop AO, Associate Professor Jacinta Elston, and Mr Michael Milton OAM.
The reappointed members are: Professor Sanchia Aranda, Professor Ian Olver AM, Professor Christobel Saunders, Mrs Lyn Swinburne AM and Dr Julie Thompson.
“The members of Cancer Australia’s Advisory Council bring a breadth of expertise, skills and experience to Cancer Australia including in oncology, general practice, medical education, cancer research, nursing, Indigenous health, palliative care, international cancer control and personal experience of cancer including childhood cancer,” Ms Plibersek said.
“People affected by cancer are central to national cancer control efforts and the work of Cancer Australia continues to be informed by and responsive to their needs.
“The new appointments to the Advisory Council and the continuity provided by the reappointments will support the strengthened Cancer Australia to deliver on its strategic objectives as the national authority in cancer control.”
The CEO of Cancer Australia, Dr Helen Zorbas, welcomed the announcement of the appointments.
“I look forward to working with the Council to further improve outcomes for Australians diagnosed with cancer, their families and carers,” Dr Zorbas said.
Members are appointed to the Cancer Australia Advisory Council by the Minister for Health for three years from the date of appointment. Representation on the Council is at its full complement of 12 members and a Chair.
