Release Date

Cancer Australia is pleased to announce that it has been successful in a grant from the Department of Health and Ageing for a project to focus on lung cancer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with lung cancer and their communities project will be funded through a grant from the Department’s Chronic Disease Prevention and Service Improvement Flexible Fund.

The project aims to improve the poorer lung cancer outcomes experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as enhance the quality of life for those with lung cancer by raising awareness and understanding of lung cancer.

The objectives are to:

  • Deliver key messages about lung cancer in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Provide culturally appropriate information about care and support, in order to improve access to appropriate health care services
  • Provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers with access to information about evidence-based care.

The project commenced in late 2012, will consult with key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and work with expert advisory groups and communities to deliver community based activities including workshops and summits and develop an Aboriginal Health Worker education resource about lung cancer.
