What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

A A

The most common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are:

  • trouble breathing
  • pain under the rib cage, in the side of the chest or in the lower back
  • cough
  • a mass under the skin in the chest
  • fever
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • excessive sweating
  • weight loss

The earliest sign of asbestos-related disease is often pleural effusion, which is a buildup of extra fluid in the pleural cavity (the space between the two layers of pleura surrounding the lungs).

The symptoms of mesothelioma are often vague and general, and similar to those for many other conditions. If you have any of these symptoms, they are unusual for you and they persist, you should talk to your doctor.
