The first National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Framework was developed by Cancer Australia to address the disparities in cancer outcomes between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians.

As the national cancer control agency, Cancer Australia identified the need for the development of an evidence-based, nationally agreed strategic Framework to guide future cancer control efforts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Framework was developed in partnership with Menzies School of Health Research, led by Associate Professor Gail Garvey, and overseen by a Steering Group chaired by Professor Jacinta Elston. 

The Framework development was informed by a systematic review of the available evidence and extensive national consultations. Contributions were received from over 500 individuals, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by cancer, health professionals working with Indigenous people and experts in Indigenous cancer control. 

Importance of the Framework

This Framework identifies the national priorities for the many communities, organisations and governments whose combined efforts are required to address the disparities and improve cancer outcomes for Indigenous Australians.  

The findings in this Framework can assist in the development or review of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer control plans and strategies to ensure that collectively we are targeting the priorities that sit within each of our areas of influence.
