Types of melanoma

There are 5 types of melanoma: 

• Superficial spreading melanoma is the most common type. It often appears as spreading of dark pigment from a mole. It usually occurs on skin that has been exposed to high levels of sunlight or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light (e.g. tanning beds).^[2] 
• Nodular melanoma appears as a firm bump that is pink, red, brown or black. It may develop a crusty surface that bleeds easily. It is usually found on the head and neck.^[3] 
• Lentigo maligna melanoma is the slowest growing type of melanoma. It appears as a dark stain with an uneven border, often on the face, ears or arms. It is not associated with a mole. 
• Acral lentiginous melanoma can appear as a colourless or lightly coloured area, or a bruise-like spot. It usually occurs on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, or under the nails. This type of melanoma is common in Asian people and people with darker skin (e.g. people of African descent), but is uncommon in fair-skinned people. 
• Desmoplastic melanoma appears as a firm, skin-coloured lump. It may look like a scar, most often on the head or neck.^[3]
