Identifying and treating infections

See your doctor urgently if the area affected by lymphoedema swells quickly or becomes red and warm. You may have a skin infection, called cellulitis, which can be treated with antibiotics.

If you have cellulitis, you may need to rest in bed and elevate the affected body part. You may also need to make some changes in how you manage your lymphoedema, so discuss this with your doctor.

Other skin conditions such as tinea, eczema and dermatitis should also be treated as soon as possible.
