AI in recruitment at Cancer Australia
To support transparency, Cancer Australia may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools for administrative purposes to help us work more efficiently. This may include using AI for developing job advertisements and candidate information packs, but not to review or screen applications or resumes. All decisions made about candidates during a recruitment process are made by a human selection panel and delegate.
What we expect from you
We recognise that AI tools can assist candidates in the preparation of their application however, all candidates are expected to participate honestly, ethically and with integrity in line with the APS Values and Employment Principles which emphasise merit, impartiality, accountability and ethical behaviour. These principles underpin how recruitment decisions are made.
To support a fair and merit-based process, we expect all candidates to:
- represent their skills, experience and capabilities accurately and truthfully
- use AI tools responsibly and in a way that aligns with APS Values
- ensure that submitted work reflects their own abilities, judgement and understanding
- take personal responsibility for the content, quality and accuracy of their application.
Using AI in a way that misrepresents your capabilities or undermines the integrity of the recruitment process may affect the outcome of your application.
When applying for a position with Cancer Australia, you are expected to:
- Be honest – ensure all information reflects your own skills, experience and achievements
- Be transparent – disclose AI use if asked and be able to explain how it was used
- Be yourself – demonstrate your own experience and capability, particularly in interviews and assessments
- Be fair – avoid using AI in a way that provides an unfair advantage
Understand the risks and use AI responsibly
AI tools can be helpful, however your application must reflect your own skills, experience and judgement.
Key risks to be aware of include:
Misrepresenting your experience - AI can make your skills sound stronger than they are or hide gaps.
- These gaps may become clear during interviews or assessments.
Relying too much on AI - Overusing AI can make it harder to:
- explain your thinking
- answer questions confidently
- demonstrate your understanding in real time
Losing your personal voice - AI responses can sound generic or overly polished.
- This makes it harder for us to understand what makes you stand out.
Getting facts wrong - AI can generate incorrect or misleading information.
- Including this may harm your credibility.
Privacy and data risks - Sharing personal information in AI tools may not be secure.
- Always check privacy settings and think carefully about what you enter.”
